Be Active to Stop Diabetes

Every 8 seconds a person dies of diabetes and its related causes. In the same 8 seconds 2 new people develop the disease which adds up to more than 3 million deaths every year and more than 6 million new cases. Diabetes can affect anyone regardless of age, weight, gender or race.

Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose or blood sugar levels are too high. Glucose is vital for health because it is an important source of energy for the cells that make up muscles and tissues. It is also the main source of fuel to the brain.  When a person has diabetes, the body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin properly. This causes sugar to build up in the blood.

Diabetes can cause serious health complications such as Heart disease, Stroke, Amputation and even Blindness.

Risk Factors

The major risk factors of diabetes include:

  • Family History
  • Lack of Exercise
  • Unhealthy Eating
  • Being Overweight

Common symptoms

To help you spot the common symptoms of diabetes remember the 4 T’s

  • Toilet – frequent urination, especially at night
  • Thirsty – drinking a lot of water than usual
  • Tired – feeling very much tired all the time
  • Thinner – weight loss for no obvious cause

People who think they might have diabetes must visit a physician for diagnosis. Apart from above symptoms patients may have sudden vision changes, very dry skin, tingling or numbness in hands or feet and extreme hunger.

The goal of diabetes treatment is to control blood glucose levels and prevent complications. The basic therapies for type 1 diabetes are healthy eating, physical activity and insulin injections. The insulin intake has to be balanced with daily activities and food intake. Monitor the blood glucose levels by frequent blood glucose testing.

For type 2 diabetes the basic therapies include physical activity, healthy eating and blood glucose testing. In addition many people need oral medication, insulin or both to control the blood glucose level.

Prevention of diabetes is easy
